The Czech Republic is located in a temperate climate zone on the boundary between the West European Ocean and East European Continental climate zones. This means that winters in the west of the Republic are milder and summers are colder. In the east winters are colder and summers warmer and dryer. The average temperature in summer is 20˚C and -5˚C in winter. The clocks are moved twice a year in the Czech Republic. The clocks are always moved an hour forward on the last Saturday in March when so-called daylight saving time begins and an hour back on the last Saturday in October when standard time begins.

The official language in the Czech Republic is Czech. The most widespread foreign language is English. Older people frequently also speak German. As a result of a common past Slovak and Russian are also frequently spoken.
When in the Czech Republic you must always carry a valid document with you. A personal document (for instance a citizen’s id. card) is sufficient for citizens of European Union states and Schengen Area countries, citizens of other countries must carry their passport.
